Secretary Nicholas Kent Visits UCF, Discusses Workforce Training and Research Programs

Overview of the Visit

This week University of Central Florida (UCF) campus hosted U.S. Department of Education Under Secretary Nicholas Kent who met with university leaders and faculty and staff and students. The visit’s goal was to understand how UCF is preparing graduates for the workforce, building partnerships with industry, and leading innovative research efforts.

Focus on Career Preparation and Industry Partnerships

The UCF leadership team explained to Under Secretary Kent their efforts which aim to improve student job readiness. The officials demonstrated how academic programs together with career services develop pathways which enable graduates to find employment and work opportunities. The discussion focused on UCF’s development of its talent pipeline which included its internship and partnership initiatives with leading corporations.

The Pegasus Partnership Program establishes a collaboration between UCF and BNY, which operates as a global financial services enterprise. The program establishes an innovation hub at UCF which provides students with internship opportunities that lead to career paths which meet industry requirements.

Experiencing UCF’s Research and Training Facilities

The visit also included tours of UCF’s research laboratories and innovation facilities. Kent and his team observed through direct experience how students and researchers utilize modern technologies to study cybersecurity and virtual simulation systems. Staff explained how programs such as the Next-Gen Cybersecurity Technology and Operations Center Lab are designed to prepare the next generation of technology professionals.

Kent received demonstrations at the Institute for Simulation and Training that showed him how students use virtual training environments to study engineering and defense research fields.

Engagement with Students and Campus Leaders

Kent built relationships with students who participated in experiential learning programs during his tenure at UCF. The discussions enabled him to listen to students who described their academic progress and their assessment of UCF’s programs which support their future employment development. University leadership emphasized that UCF establishes its capacity to support workforce development and economic growth through partnerships with employers which prioritize applied research. The organization also emphasized that academic programs need to be developed according to the requirements of emerging industries.

Looking Ahead

The Under Secretary’s visit demonstrated that federal officials support partnerships between universities and companies to create work-ready graduates. UCF officials said they look forward to continued dialogue with the Department of Education and expanding opportunities that help students succeed in highly competitive and evolving fields.
